Vaughn places second in state’s 100-meter dash
By Mike BergerCanton High senior Jon Vaughn is the second fastest sprinter in Massachusetts as he placed second in the 100-meter dash at the All-State Track Meet held at Bridgewater State University on June 4.
In the preliminaries, he placed third at 11.11 seconds, then finished second in the finals at 11.16 seconds. The winning time of 10.8 seconds was set by Brett Buskey of Blackstone Millville High School.
“Jon didn’t want yesterday (June 4) to be his last high school running day,” CHS head coach Brian Conroy said, noting that Vaughn will represent Canton and Massachusetts in the New England meet in Burlington, Vermont next Saturday. “We wish him good luck next week.”
Conroy described Vaughn as a determined, hardworking athlete. “He made a great comeback, passing six other runners,” he said, “but couldn’t pass Brett.”
Conroy noted that Ben Mattson, who coaches the girls’ team, worked with the sprinters, hurdlers and long jumpers all season. “He deserves credit for Jon’s success and the hard work he puts in preparing our athletes,” Conroy praised.
Conroy said Vaughn’s best time of the season was 10.7 seconds, recorded with a hand-held watch, and assumed to be a school record.
Canton High also had other track team representatives compete in the All-States. Senior Chidimma Nwankwo finished ninth in the discus at 109 feet, nine inches, and 12th in the shot put at 34 feet. Senior Radiya Buchanan competed in the girls’ triple jump and finished 18th, jumping 34 feet, two and a half inches.
Mattson also commented on Canton’s day at the State Championships. “Chidimma had a season personal record in the discus,” he said, adding that Buchanan went up against “very good competition” and had decent jumps, though she did not make it to the finals. Lauren Berman, the Division 3 champion in the mile, was unable to compete due to an injury.
Mattson noted that Vicky Tondre, Buchanan, and Rachel Campagna will be competing at a heptathlon event at Notre Dame Academy in Hingham. “And we’re all pumped to see what Jon Vaughn can do next weekend at New Englands,” he said.
