Baseball team falls to Norton in 1st round of tourney
By Mike BergerNorton High School ended the CHS baseball team’s brief foray into the postseason by coming from behind to win 10-5 in the first round of the Division 3 south playoffs on Thursday, June 2. The game started at 12:30 p.m. so that the seniors could make the CHS prom later that day.
The loss ended Canton’s season at 6-13, but on a promising note, the Bulldogs won more games than in previous years and made the playoffs for the first time in several years. Several of the team’s key players are underclassmen and should return next year. Senior pitcher Matt Bernstein, named to the Hockomock League All-Star team, started for Canton and was staked to a 4-1 lead as the Bulldogs scored three runs in the first inning and forced Norton to change pitchers in the second.
Canton lost the momentum in the third inning, however, as Norton students arrived at the end of the school day and lent support to their team. Norton scored five runs in the third for a 6-4 lead, then added two more in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings.
When facing the 4-1 deficit, Norton used two hit batsmen, an interference call, three singles and a double for the 6-4 lead. Bernstein was relieved in the third inning, allowing five hits, three walks and striking out three batters.
Canton used four singles and a wild pitch to jump out to a 3-0 lead after the first inning. But after Norton relieved its pitcher in the second, Canton was limited to four hits the rest of the way.
Norton was eliminated in the second round by Medfield on Saturday.
