Softball team edged by Clippers in first round

After a dramatic turnaround in the final weeks of the season that ensured a spot in the postseason, the Canton High softball team fell 2-1 to Norwell in the first round of the Division 2 south sectional tournament.

Seeded 21st, the Bulldogs almost pulled off a huge upset over the 12th-seeded Clippers.

Canton scored first in the fourth inning when senior captain Olivia Kenyon walked, Sam Sullivan laid down a bunt, and Cady Kelly lined a single to center field to score Kenyon.

The Bulldogs managed to hold the lead until the sixth inning when Norwell pulled ahead with two unearned runs. But just as they did all season, the girls never gave up and plowed into the seventh inning, only to leave the tying runner stranded on base.

“To say I am very proud of this team would be a huge understatement,” coach Ed Amico said. “Half of the team never played varsity, and seven of the starting nine were playing new positions. Having started the season 1-11, they could have easily quit, but they kept playing hard.”
