MAC: July 4 Celebration Moving to GMS

By

DID YOU KNOW…

Canton Recreation Director Jeff Kaylor and the Recreation Commission are busy putting together the final plans for the town’s annual July 4th celebration. For the first time, this year’s event will be held at the Galvin Middle School on Pecunit Street on Monday, July 4. The festivities will begin at 5 p.m. at the school where there will be free rides for the kids, a food court, and a live performance by the popular 60s band “The Reminisants.” The 4th of July fireworks display, billed as one of the largest on the south shore, will be fired from the town cemetery property adjacent to the middle school starting at 9 p.m.

Additionally, plans and preparations are underway for the 44th annual Fourth of July five-mile road race. The race, which generally attracts about 150 runners, will once again begin and end at the Canton Town Club on Bailey Street. The race will start at 9:30 a.m. on July 4; and for the 44th consecutive year, MAC has the honor and privilege of being the official race starter.

This year’s generous race sponsors once again include Attorney Glen Hannington, state Representative Bill Galvin, the Canton Town Club, the Canton Lions Club, the Bank of Canton, the Canton Cooperative Bank, the Canton Association of Industries, the Canton Downtown Business Association, and PADCO Countertop Company.

Pat Leahy, a 1994 Canton High graduate and former hockey standout, has been named the new head hockey coach at Stonehill College.

MAC sends congratulations to firefighter Jim Podgurski and Fire Lieutenant Barry Ronayne who both recently retired from the Canton Fire Department, Jim with 40 years of service and Barry with 37 years.

The Canton Council on Aging will hold its annual cookout on Thursday, June 22, at 12 noon. The cookout will be held at the American Legion Hall.

This month, the average price for a gallon of regular gasoline in Massachusetts is $3.84. A year ago at this time, the state average was $2.76 per gallon. The national average for a gallon of regular gas peaked at $3.98 during the first week of May before sliding down to $3.78 per gallon by the end of May.

There are 3,125 students in the Canton school system.

Here is a little trivia: In 1886, President Grover Cleveland, 49, married Frances Folsom in the Blue Room of the White House. At 21, she became America’s youngest first lady. (To date, Cleveland is the only president to marry in the executive mansion).

Finally, you may be interested in knowing that June 23 marks the 41st anniversary of the MAC column. A lot has happened since June 23, 1970, when MAC first picked up his pen, and he anticipates a lot more things to report before calling it a day.

When we come face to face, our differences vanish.

This is all for now folks.

See you next week.
