Canton A’s get big lift from veterans

By

In a rain-shortened week, the Canton A’s got a big effort from head coach and reserve pitcher Kee Arguimbau and veteran players Steve Delanian and Joe Belmosto as the A’s swept a doubleheader against the South Shore Warriors in Hanson Sunday afternoon.

The victories gave Canton a 5-6-1 record and pushed the team to the middle of the standings in the nine-team Cranberry League. Rain postponed most of the action last week, except for an 8-2 loss to league-leading Braintree.

Delanian, returning after two injury-plagued seasons to his thumb and hand, is now fully healed, and it showed Sunday as he cracked a 380-foot homerun to give the A’s a 4-2 win in extra innings in the first game of the doubleheader.

Down 1-0 in the sixth inning, Chuck Erickson led off with a double and advanced to third on a single by John Garabedian. An RBI single by Belmosto tied the game, and a double by Delanian gave Canton a 2-1 lead going into the seventh inning. An outfield error spoiled the win for starting A’s pitcher Tyler Hitchcock, who gave up no earned runs on five hits over seven strong innings.

The victory went to A’s reliever Mark Nelson, who limited South Shore to no runs and one hit in two innings. In the ninth inning, Belmosto led off with a single and then Delanian hit a booming homerun to left field to give Canton a commanding 4-2 lead.

In the second game, starter Tim Bonham had to leave after the first inning with shoulder tightness, and Arguimbau came on in relief, throwing four innings of shutout ball and limiting the Warriors to one hit with only one walk. Arguimbau said he felt great pitching, noting that it was his first win in a long time. The winning run came in the fifth inning when Brian Williams singled and was doubled home by Belmosto. The game was called in the sixth inning after a quick thunderstorm muddied the field.

Canton was hoping to get above .500 with games this week at Brockton on Monday, at Plymouth on Tuesday, and at home versus Brockton on Friday, July 1, at 6 p.m. The next game after the July 4th break is against Braintree at home on Tuesday, July 5.
