JFK students pitch in to help Japan
By Canton CitizenIt all started when Mrs. Hannigan showed pictures of the Japan disaster to her daughters, Michaela, a fourth grader, and Grace, a second grader at the John F. Kennedy Elementary School. They couldn’t believe what they saw.
That afternoon they told their friends about the disaster. They all felt so badly about it and talked about what they could do to help the children in Japan. They hoped to raise money to help rebuild schools and buy school supplies.
While meeting with their friends — Molly Ludwig, Julia Hamilton and Rose Hazam — they decided to start a fundraiser at school. First, they thought about having a bake sale, but they decided they could raise more money by having a rewarded fundraiser called “Help Save Japan One Coin at a Time.”
The grade who brought in the most money would receive a popsicle party. They knew there would be a lot of work to organize this event. They met at the Canton library, made posters, and decorated money jars for each grade, which they placed in the JFK lobby.
The fundraiser was held Monday to Friday, June 6-10, and every day the jars got heavier with coins. The girls worked as a team, hung posters and flyers, took turns announcing the event during the morning announcements, and gave updates during the afternoon announcements. Hoping to collect $400, the girls eventually doubled their goal thanks to the generosity of the JFK students and their families. They now look forward to donating the money to UNICEF.
Thanks to interim principal Jan Chamberlain, assistant principal Meredith Carey, the JFK CAPT, Mrs. Hannigan, fourth grade teacher Mrs. Grogan, and the students of the JFK for making the fundraiser possible. Through our coins, the JFK was able to help Japan!
