July 4th celebration returns to Canton
By Jay TurnerFollowing a two-year hiatus, Canton’s annual July 4th celebration and gala fireworks display — a popular tradition going back more than 30 years — will make its comeback this coming Monday, July 4, beginning at 5 p.m.
The one big change with this year’s celebration is the venue, as organizers opted to move it from the high school to the Galvin Middle School, which is located on Pecunit Street.
Sponsored by the Recreation Commission, the event will offer free games and activities for kids, including a baseball pitch, basketball toss, dunk tank, face painting, an obstacle course, and a train ride. There will also be concession stands as well as a live performance by the popular oldies band “The Reminisants” starting at 6:30. The fireworks display will kick off at 9.
Parking will be available at the middle school, and residents are encouraged to bring blankets and lawn chairs to the celebration.
Residents are also invited to participate in another July 4th tradition — the annual five-mile road race and two-mile fun run, which starts at 9:30 a.m. at the Canton Town Club on Bailey Street. The cost to participate is $10 per runner or $5 for the fun run. Race registration begins at 8:30.
Both the race and the evening celebration are funded by contributions from various local organizations and businesses; however, donations are still being accepted and donation barrels will be set up at the middle school on the evening of July 4. Donations can also be mailed to the Canton Recreation Department, 92 Pleasant Street, Canton, MA 02021.
