MAC: What’s Your Home Worth?
By Joe DeFeliceDID YOU KNOW …
Home prices in Canton have dropped by 20 percent since the real estate market peaked in 2005. The median price for a single-family home in Canton in 2005 was $511,250; last year, the median price fell to $410,000. Statewide, the median sale prices of single-family homes declined from $355,000 in 2005 to $277,676 in 2010, a 22 percent decrease. Median prices in Sharon fell 13 percent to $394,000. In Stoughton, prices fell 18 percent to $291,000, and Randolph had the largest drop of south shore towns: 32 percent to $238,700.
Canton’s state Senator Brian A. Joyce recently spent 10 days in China as part of a trade mission to explore opportunities for trade and cooperation between the United States and China, the world’s second-largest economy. The trip was funded by two Chinese nonprofit companies through the Council of State Governments.
Colin Clapton is the new head coach of the Canton American Legion Post 24 baseball team. Clapton replaced Junior Medina, who took over as the new head coach of the Canton High School baseball team. Al Jackson, former longtime Canton Legion head coach, will be one of the new assistants along with Walter Mann and Bill Murray.
The CHS baseball team finished the season with a 5-11 record, but qualified for the state playoffs by beating a majority of Division 3 opponents.
Restaurants are now eligible to open at 10 a.m. on Sundays and sell alcohol. All restaurants must apply with the selectmen for a new license.
The selectmen recently approved the transfer of an all-alcohol license from Finbarr’s Auld Irish Pub to T&B Pub, to be owned by Rodney Lampron of Norwood.
Canton Town Meeting voters went against the selectmen in approving the Massachusetts Community Preservation Act, which allows towns to adopt a real estate tax surcharge that would go toward the purchase of open space, historic preservation, and community housing. The surcharge would be 1 percent of the annual real estate tax levy and would cost the average homeowner $42 per year. The act must be approved at the ballot before it becomes law in Canton.
The name Jacob continued a 12-year run as the most popular name for boys in 2010. Isabella was the most popular name for girls for the second year in a row. Jacob was followed by Ethan, Michael, Jayden and William, while Isabella led Sophia, Emma, Olivia and Ava.
Massachusetts is offering rebates of up to $200 for residents who buy new energy-efficient refrigerators and air conditioners. The program, for purchases made on or after July 28, will offer rebates of $150 for Energy Star refrigerators and $50 for air conditioners that will replace older models. The program, part of the Patrick administration’s commitment to energy efficiency, is funded with federal grants. It is expected to save consumers $2 million while saving about 1.8 million kilowatt hours of power for a year.
MAC congratulates the Canton DPW for doing a great job beautifying Canton. The flowers, trees and streets in the downtown area are looking great. However, MAC has gotten a few inquiries about the streetlight located at the corner of Washington and Neponset streets, across from Big D’s, which does not work and has remained unlit since it was put up. Hopefully, the town will show us the light soon.
Nobody can go back and start a new beginning, but anyone can start today and make a new ending.
This is all for now folks. See you next week.
