If they are into music, consider the Canton Summer Music Program being offered by the Canton Public Schools Performing Arts Department. From July 18-28, Monday through Thursday, there are a variety of summer music programs to choose from. Take one or take a couple!
The morning session will run from 8:30-11:30 a.m. The two programs being offered in the morning are Summer Concert Band and Jump Start Strings. Concert band is for students entering grades 6-9 who have at least one year of playing experience. Students will work in small and large groups to improve musical and playing skills. Jump Start Strings is for students entering grades 4-6 who have no prior string experience. This is a great opportunity for your child to see if he or she might want to play a string instrument. Instrument rental is available the first day of camp.
The afternoon session will run from 12-3 p.m. There are three programs offered in the afternoon: Summer Jazz camp, Advanced Strings and Canton Glee!
Jazz camp is for students entering grades 7-9 with at least two years of playing experience. They will learn various jazz styles and learn about playing jazz music. Advanced Strings is for students entering grades 5-7 with at least one year of string experience who want to work on their music skills. Canton Glee is a chorus offering for students entering grades 6-9. Students will learn singing techniques while singing contemporary Broadway and pop songs.
Band instruction is provided by Brian Thomas, Canton High School’s director of bands. The strings are directed by Barbara Gorczyca, string instructor at the Galvin Middle School, and chorus instruction is provided by Sarah Collmer, Canton Public Schools’ performing arts director.
The cost for one session is $200; for two sessions it is $350. Students can take a morning and an afternoon session and bring a lunch to have in between. High school students will serve as counselors and assist the teachers. The last day of camp will feature a performance. For more information or to sign up, email Brian Thomas at thomasb@cantonma.org.
