Man About Canton: South Coast Rail Project
By Joe DeFeliceDID YOU KNOW …
The short rail spur from Canton Junction to Stoughton is slated to become the state’s first “green” rail line. The line will be extended from Stoughton to Fall River and New Bedford under the state’s proposed South Coast Rail Project to connect coastal towns with Boston via Canton. The state Department of Energy and Environmental Affairs recently issued a certificate directing MassDOT to focus on using electric trains along the route, based on the air quality benefits that electricity offers over diesel fuel. The certificate sets forth the scope of the Final Environmental Impact Report for the route. If the state can find the money, the $2 billion line is expected to be operational by 2017.
