Two arrested in home breaks ~

Two local men were charged last week with breaking and entering into a home during the daytime and may have been involved in earlier attempted home break-ins. Police arrested Daniel J. Gentile, 24, of Westwood, and William Harry Daniels, 24, of Dedham and charged them with breaking and entering in the daytime (felony), putting a person in fear, and vandalizing property.

According to Police Lt. Patty Sherrill, a homeowner called 911 on Thursday, July 21, at 1:48 p.m. and told police that his wife had called him at work to say a man was attempting to break into their home through a kitchen window after she did not respond to the doorbell. The man fled the scene when the wife came into the kitchen.

She was able to get a description of a red Audi and a license plate number. A few hours earlier, an Elm Drive resident had reported suspicious activity after spotting two men in a driveway with a description of the same red Audi. Officer Erroll Lane issued a BOLO (Be on the lookout) alert to area police, and Dedham police later arrested the two men after spotting the vehicle on Sprague Street in Dedham. Police searched the car and found jewelry, which was later connected to a house break on Longmeadow Drive. Daniels was also charged with receiving stolen property over $250.

Firefighters, school staff called for major water break

A sprinkler pipe burst in Building C at Canton High School on Friday evening, July 22, resulting in a significant amount of water damage on the middle and bottom floors. (The top floor is the main floor.)

According to School Superintendent Jeff Granatino, firefighters worked late into the night alongside school maintenance workers pumping water out of the building, and by Saturday afternoon, the vast amount of water had been removed and the sprinkler system was back up and running.

Nevertheless, Granatino said the break created a “pretty good mess,” causing damage to tiles and walls as well as to “classroom content” such as furniture and books. School officials were due to assess the damage this week.

Two police officers assaulted by motorcyclist

Two Canton police officers working a detail on Route 138 on Thursday, July 21, were assaulted but did not suffer serious injury after they were allegedly struck by a motorcyclist who did not stop for an alleged passing violation. Police later apprehended Yusef Farid Khan, 24, of 65 Westchester Drive and charged him with two counts of assault with a dangerous weapon, failure to stop for a police officer, and driving an unregistered motor vehicle. Lt. Patty Sherrill said the two officers, Donald Wolfe and Detective Eric Wade, were both hit with the handlebars of the motorcycle as they tried to talk to the suspect and force him to stop on the side of the road.

Lightning causes house fire

A bolt of lightning, which split a tree in half, caused a house fire on Russell Street on Saturday morning, July 23, around 10 a.m. Fire Lt. Brian Marshall said damage was estimated to be around $10,000. The lightning first hit a tree, split it in half, and then spread to the siding of the house. Marshall praised the work of a neighbor, who used a garden hose to douse the fire until firefighters arrived. The house is still habitable and no injuries were reported.

Three arrested for spray painting incident

Police arrested three Canton male juveniles for spray painting equipment at the skateboard park at the Galvin Middle School on Wednesday evening, July 20. The three boys were charged with vandalizing property and two counts each of malicious destruction of property over $250. Lt. Patty Sherrill said an anonymous caller tipped police to the incident in progress at 8:12 p.m. and Detective Chip Yeaton responded.
