Man About Canton: Canton Water
By Joe DeFeliceDID YOU KNOW …
The Canton Water Department’s annual Consumer Confidence Report was recently mailed to every household. The report is based on 2010 test data and is designed to inform residents about local water quality and services. According to the report, Canton uses an average of 2.4 million gallons of water daily. Ninety percent of this water is supplied by MWRA through a connection to our water system, and 10 percent of the town’s water comes from the new James Moran Water Treatment Facility, which started up in September of 2010.
Also, construction has begun on a project that will provide a high-pressure flow of MWRA water to the Royall Street/Green Street area of Canton. This section of Canton, which currently receives its water from Milton, consists of 53 residences and many businesses, including Reebok, OneBeacon, and Dunkin’ Brands.
The Titanium Group has petitioned the Canton Board of Appeals for a gasoline service station with underground storage tanks, an incidental retail facility, and a drive-thru donut shop to be located at 955 Turnpike Street.
Directory Assistance calls from your landline now cost $1.25, while it costs $1.49 per call on your cell phone. Last year, you could make 10 calls for free; and this year, it went from three free calls to none, so watch out when you dial 411 for directory assistance.
Postage rates have also gone up, but you may not have noticed the changes because first-class letters weighing up to one ounce remain the same at 44 cents. However, the cost for each additional ounce went up 3 cents to 20 cents. Businesses are bearing the brunt of this increase.
The number of Canton households receiving benefits from food stamps soared from 276 in 2008 to 533 in 2011, a 93 percent increase in just three years. To qualify, a household of two can make no more than $2,429 in gross income per month; $3,052 for a household of three; and $3,675 for a household of four. There are also eligibility limits on savings and other resources. Ten years ago, Massachusetts ranked 48th in the nation for the number of residents who were eligible and signed up for food stamps. Today, Massachusetts ranks eighth. The reason for the surge: The recession and a push to enroll elderly and disabled residents. Former President George W. Bush turned 65 on July 6.
The United States borrows 40 cents of every dollar it spends. If it can’t pay all its debts after August 2, markets would downgrade its AAA credit rating, triggering higher interest rates and eroding the dollar’s value.
It was pointed out to MAC that the stone wall at the town cemetery on Washington Street goes from about three feet high to less than a foot high just before the beginning of the black chain link fence. At that point, a steep drop inside the cemetery could pose a problem if someone loses their footing. The chain link fence should be extended about 30 feet to prevent any accidents.
Also regarding that stone wall, the town needs to repair the section that was toppled over by a car coming out of Randolph Street. It has been like that for months.
MAC wonders why the mailboxes were removed across the street from the post office. It would be a lot easier for the elderly and those in cars to drop off their mail there rather than cross the street to the post office.
Because we live within a stone’s throw of each other is no reason we should throw stones at each other.
Sometimes one chance is all you need.
This is all for now folks. See you next week.
