By

Nicholas L. Vinios, 81, of Dover and Palm Beach, FL, passed away July 29.

He recently celebrated the 20th anniversary of the heart transplant he received in 1991 at Brigham and Women’s Hospital. Nick was always grateful for those who cared so well for him over the past 20 years, in particular, Dr. Gilbert Mudge and Dr. Lawrence Cohn as well as Dr. Bernard Lown of the Lown Cardiovascular Clinic for his pre-transplant care.

Mr. Vinios married his wife, Jean, in 1955 and then joined his father-in-law’s real estate development business, John Philopoulos Associates. The company built many shopping centers anchored by A&P Supermarkets and King’s Department Stores from the late 1950s into the 1970s. In 1970, the company developed the 57 Complex in Park Square, Boston, which was operated by the company for 40 years until it was sold last year.

Nick was instrumental in the founding of the Hellenic Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Canton and continued his support of the facility with a charitable golf tournament. He was also a founding member of the Alpha Omega Council, a Hellenic charitable organization; Leadership 100, an organization dedicated to advancing the Orthodox faith and Hellenic ideals in America; the Blue Hill Masonic Lodge of Canton; and a member of the board of directors of USTrust Corp.

A longtime member of Woodland Golf Club in Newton and Palm Beach Polo and Country Club in Wellington, FL, he was also an avid fisherman and boater and was especially proud of piloting his Bertram back and forth to Florida.

Mr. Vinios was born in Lowell, graduated from Lowell High School and attended Northeastern University while he was working.

He was the beloved husband of Jean (Philopoulos) for 56 years. Father of Louis N. Vinios and his wife, Zacharie, of Osterville, Elaine Pantazopoulos and her husband, Taki, of Milton, Diane Lucchesi and her husband, Mauro, of Medfield, and Kristin Marken and her husband, Anthony, of Dover. Brother of the late John L. Vinios and Christine Sotakos.

Grandfather of Christina, Nicholas, Bettina and Jean Catherine Vinios; Nikki and George Pantazopoulos; Dina, Andreas and Alexandra Lucchesi; and George, Demitri and Nicholas Marken. Also survived by many nieces and nephews.

A funeral service was held Tuesday morning, August 2, in St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church in Weston. If desired, donations in Nick’s memory may be made to the Hellenic Nursing Home, 601 Sherman St., Canton, MA 02021, or to Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Cardiology Department, 75 Francis St., Boston, MA 02115, or to St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church, 57 Brown St., Weston, MA 02493.
