Man About Canton: Teacher Contract Negotiations
By Joe DeFeliceDID YOU KNOW …
The main sticking point in the Canton school teachers’ contract negotiations with the School Committee is the proposed restructuring of the salary scale that would double the number of years (from 12 to 24) that a teacher would have to complete in order to reach the top of the pay scale.
MAC’s suggestion to the School Committee: Settle for a one-year contract with a 0 percent wage increase and leave the salary scale at 12 years and wait until the economy picks up before looking at extending the 12 years to 24 years.
Talking about the School Committee, at a recent meeting they agreed on a family cap of $780 for athletic user fees. Most athletes will pay $195 per sport. Hockey players will be charged an extra $250 to offset rink costs.

The LoJack Company recently signed a 10-year lease to take over the former Tweeter headquarters at 40 Pequot Way, off Route 138. LoJack will be the sole tenant in the 62,000-square-foot, three-story building. The company expects to move into the building by the end of this year.
The annual tuition and fees at the four UMass undergraduate campuses is about $11,800.
The reason that the price of an ice cream cone has gone up this year is because milk prices are up 38 percent, sugar prices are up almost 20 percent, and the cost of high-fructose corn syrup rose over 22 percent. The factors behind the price increase for ice cream’s base ingredients are much the same as those for food in general — global demand, a weak dollar, and the high cost of the corn feed that most dairy cattle eat. However, even with all the price increases, the average price of a half-gallon of ice cream has increased just 7 percent.

Canton Animal Control Officer Paul Bastable, age 40, was recently placed on a 30-day paid administrative leave by Canton selectmen. Stoughton police charged Bastable with possession of cocaine with intent to distribute. Bastable was arrested after he drove the town’s animal control van to a parking lot on Pearl Street in Stoughton and entered a vehicle that was under surveillance by Stoughton officers. According to Canton selectmen, Bastable had a clean record, was a good employee, and has been the full-time Canton animal control officer for the past three years.
