Boys’ soccer team bounces back with 2 straight wins

Wholly unsatisfied with its 0-0-2 start to the season, the CHS boys’ soccer team made a few on-field adjustments and got right back to its winning ways last week, combining for nine goals in blowout victories over Foxboro and Mansfield.

With the team managing just a single goal over its first two games, head coach Danny Erickson had decided to shake things up and move senior captain Scott Levy, the team’s right back for the past three seasons, up to the forward position in hopes of sparking the offense.

And the move paid immediate dividends as Levy scored in both contests while the rest of the offense caught fire, resulting in lopsided wins of 5-1 and 4-0.

“He was definitely a bit of a catalyst for us,” Erickson said of Levy, who is currently tied for the team lead in goals with three.

Levy shares that honor with junior Matt Lennon, who scored all three of his goals last week, including two on Tuesday at Foxboro in the Bulldogs’ first win of the season. Senior captain Chris Murray and junior Drew Blake also netted a goal in the win.

The team then went in search of its first home victory on Friday versus Mansfield, and the result was equally impressive as Canton outplayed its visitors on both ends of the field.

Senior Matt Malloy got the scoring going about midway through the first half, and Levy followed it up with a goal just minutes later off a Murray throw-in to make it 2-0 in favor of the Bulldogs.

In the second half, Lennon added to the lead with his third goal of the week, while sophomore Sam Larson finished things off with his first career varsity goal.

The Bulldog defense also played well behind goalkeeper and team captain Colby Gavigan, who earned his second shutout of the season, along with the back four of David Feeney, Matt Kelly, Jimmy Kelly and Andrew Vinciguerra, who were “well organized and very strong on the day,” according to Erickson.

The two victories improved Canton’s overall record to 2-0-2 and moved the team to within one point of Oliver Ames for the top spot in the Davenport Division standings.

The Bulldogs are scheduled to host the Tigers this Saturday at 7 p.m., and it may very well be a battle for first place depending on the results of earlier games this week against Kelly-Rex opponents North Attleboro and King Philip.
