Bulldogs fall to NA 7-0 in rain-soaked affair
By Mike BergerIt was a game of inches, and unfortunately for the Canton High Bulldogs, visiting North Attleboro made a few more plays to come away with a 7-0 win Friday night at CHS. The game was held in wet conditions with most of the second half played in a driving rain.
Canton appeared to score the tying touchdown midway through the third quarter on a 60-yard run by star running back Dexter Green, but the play was called back because the team had broken the huddle with 12 men on the field.
North Attleboro scored just before halftime, and it came after the Bulldogs had withstood an NA offensive charge with an interception by Elias Camacho deep in Canton territory. Two plays later, Canton fumbled at its own eight-yard line. On fourth down, Canton defensive lineman Brandyn Sparks had NA quarterback Spyro Varetimos on the run, but Varetimos threw the ball over three defenders to Alex Jette for a touchdown with 35 seconds left in the half.
After the game, NA coach Don Johnson agreed that the play by his quarterback was one of the differences in the game. He also described Canton as a much-improved team and an opponent that will give other teams lots of problems.
“They are a tough team,” Johnson said. “They have lots of good runners who are very impressive. We just made a few more plays, including a great play by our quarterback, and that was the difference. But Canton will win a lot more games in the future.”
Despite the loss, Canton head coach Dave Bohane said he was very proud of his team and how they stood toe to toe with a North Attleboro squad that is now undefeated at 3-0.
“I wish I had done some things differently and made some adjustments,” he said, “but I am proud of these kids. They played hard and well. But we had some penalties and mistakes we have to correct.”
Bohane singled out several players for their strong performance on defense, including Jakiel Moses-Harris and Omar Parkman at linebacker, Conor O’Brien, Camacho and Sparks, who led the team in tackles, and Tavon Jacobs, who had a few sacks. Bohane said he sees Jacobs as a “game changer” and someone who “really can make some plays.”
On the injury front, Bohane said Trevor Ruane played well in place of Jordan Rodman, who left the game with a broken hand. Rodman is the long snapper on punts and field goals. Bohane said he is awaiting a medical report on Rodman’s condition. He did have some good news on lineman Justin Rudy, who is expected to return to action this week.
Canton now sets its sights on Foxboro, which is 1-2 with losses to North Attleboro and Attleboro and a victory over Falmouth. The game has been moved to 2 p.m. on Saturday because of the SAT test.
