I want to take this opportunity to thank the town of Canton and Canton High School for the years of support I was given as the boys’ basketball coach at Canton High School. I cherished every single day that I was involved with the basketball program in Canton, and it is with great sadness that I have offered my resignation.

When I took over the program in 2003, I was 25, single, and living and working in Canton. I had dreams of coaching in Canton for 25 to 30 years. Life has changed since then as I am now married with a soon-to-be 2-year-old son and another on the way in November.

My family and I no longer live in Canton as we have just purchased a new home in Marion. I am also in my third year as the principal at Old Rochester Regional High School in Mattapoisett. Living and working on the South Coast has made it very prohibitive for me to put in the requisite time to continue to develop the basketball program.

My wife has been a basketball widow the past few years as a two-hour practice became a four-hour event with my commute. It is impossible to be the best husband and father while also being the best coach. My family and the players both deserve the best. This upcoming season looks to be one of the best in recent memory with many talented players returning to a state-tournament team.

The difficult part of this decision was leaving behind those players who have given so much to the program. In the end, those players deserve a coach who can devote 100 percent of his or her attention to the basketball program.

I want to thank all of my current and former players and assistant coaches. It has truly been a rewarding experience for me and I will take many great memories with me. Each season had its own story, and each player contributed to those stories. I’ve made great friendships in basketball in Canton and have been fortunate to have been surrounded by so many supportive parents, students, administrators, assistant coaches, and fans. I wish tremendous success to all CHS athletes and I look forward to taking my seat in the stands. I’ll be sitting with Frankie! Go Bulldogs!

Sincerely,

Mike Devoll
