Girls’ soccer hits midpoint with perfect record
By Jay TurnerWith last Tuesday’s 6-0 blowout win over Stoughton at home, the CHS girls’ varsity soccer team has now reached the midpoint of the season without so much as a blemish on its overall record.
Standing at a perfect 8-0 with six shutouts, the Bulldogs have looked unstoppable at times this season, although head coach Paul Turner is confident that their best is yet to come — a scary thought indeed for their next eight opponents.
“I’m noticing a lot of small improvements every week,” said Turner, whose team was due to face a tough test in Franklin last night at Memorial Field.
In last week’s lone contest against the Black Knights, Canton was clearly the superior team but found itself in a surprisingly competitive game at the half, leading 2-0 on a pair of goals by junior Brianna Duserick and senior Meghan Barrera.
“We pretty much controlled the opening 20 minutes, but Stoughton defended really well,” Turner said. “They didn’t threaten us, but they were really stubborn and worked hard.”
The second half was a different story, however, as the Bulldogs exploded for four quick goals, including two from junior captain Lauren Berman and one apiece from senior Vicki Tondre and junior Meghan Lennon, who continues to impress with her energetic style of play.
“She’s kind of like the energizer bunny,” Turner said of Lennon. “She’s been huge for us this year.”
Kristin Burns got the start in net for the Bulldogs and collected a few saves while earning the shutout. The entire backfield turned in yet another solid performance, led by freshman sensation Hailee Duserick, who has exceeded all expectations, according to Turner.
After a short week due to Rosh Hashana, the Canton girls were excited to get back to action this week with games against Attleboro and Franklin. They will host Sharon next Tuesday and then head to Foxboro for an away game next Friday afternoon.
