CHS golfers score 2 major upsets
By Mike BergerWith big performances from its younger golfers as well as its seniors, the Canton High golf team had its biggest week of the year, knocking off perennial league powerhouses Mansfield and Sharon within days of each other.
Canton improved to 5-4 overall with the wins and are now just two victories shy of qualifying for the state tournament with four matches to go.
Mansfield has won the league title in each of the past five seasons and came into the match against Canton with an 8-2 record. The Bulldogs last beat the Hornets in 2006.
Leading the way against Mansfield was Sam Riemer with a 40, followed by Kevin Marchand with a 41, Mike Lamir with a 42, and Mike Reardon with a 43. Although it was a wet and soggy day, CHS head coach Jim Spillane said he was pleased to see consistent scores.
The next day, the Bulldogs scored a 157-160 win over Sharon. The Eagles had beaten Canton earlier in the season and were tied for the division lead at 7-2. Spillane said the Eagles have one of the best golfers in the state in Isabel Southard, and she and Riemer tied for the lowest scorer with a 36, which is one over par at the Blue Hill Country Club.
Canton’s next lowest scorer was Lamir with a 40. Freshman Mike Breviglia also shot a 40 in his first-ever varsity match. Reardon finished off the scoring with a 41.
The lone disappointment of the week came on Tuesday as the Bulldogs fell to Attleboro in overtime 204-205 at the Highland Golf Course. Both teams had a tie score of 161 after four cards, but Attleboro’s fifth-best golfer edged Canton’s by one stroke.
Considering it was Canton’s first-ever visit to Highland, Spillane was pleased with the results, noting that the layout is a bit tricky for first-time players.
Riemer still had the best score of the day with a one-over-par 36, followed by Lamir (40), Brian Brooks (42), Rich Nee (44) and Sam Hrubec (44).
The Bulldogs have one last busy week, which started yesterday at Oliver Ames and continues today and tomorrow with home matches against North Attleboro and Stoughton. Their last league match is set for Thursday, October 20, at Franklin. Three senior golfers — Lamir, Marchand and Reardon — will participate in the Hockomock League Individual Tournament at Granite Links in Quincy on October 19.
