Win streak ends at 9 for girls’ soccer team

When perfection is a realistic possibility, even a scoreless draw against a first-place team can be considered a setback — and that was certainly the feeling among players and coaches on the CHS girls’ soccer team as the Bulldogs settled for a 0-0 tie against Franklin last Wednesday night at home.

In a way, the result was even more frustrating considering that the Canton girls, after weathering an early storm, completely dominated the game from about the 20-minute mark of the first half to the final whistle.

“It was as dominant as you could possibly be without scoring,” said head coach Paul Turner, whose team had a bunch of near-misses, including several in the second half.

All told, the Bulldogs outshot the visitors 16-5 and hit the post four times — twice off the foot of team scoring leader Lauren Berman. But the Panthers’ defenders were up to the task and the game ended with neither team finding the net.

The difference, according to Turner, was in the reaction of the two sides after it was over.

“[Franklin] celebrated at the end and we were disappointed,” he said. “I think that kind of shows how far we’ve come from last year.”

Ironically, the Bulldogs didn’t play nearly as well against Attleboro earlier in the week, yet they still won going away by a score of 7-2 thanks to a remarkable five-goal afternoon by Berman.

The Bombardiers were winless going into the game, but they scored the first goal and only trailed by one (3-2) at the half. That was the closest they would get, however, as Berman and the Bulldogs made it look easy in a lopsided second half.

Having already locked up a postseason spot, Canton (9-0-1) can now turn its attention to winning the Davenport Division, which it currently leads by two points over Oliver Ames. The two squads will square off next Friday in what could be a winner-take-all affair. In the meantime, the Bulldogs were gearing up for Senior Night against Sharon this Tuesday, followed by an away game Friday versus Foxboro and another next Wednesday at nonleague Silver Lake Regional.
