BOH to hold 24th annual Health Fair Oct. 22
By Canton CitizenSubmitted by the Canton Board of Health ~
It’s flu season again and that means two things: First, it’s time to get your annual flu shot. Second, the Canton Board of Health will again be presenting its 24th annual Health Fair on Saturday, October 22, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Canton High School.
As in past years, the Health Fair will feature numerous exhibits, including screening for diabetes, cholesterol levels, vision, hearing, and blood pressure, as well as body fat analysis. Those attending will have the opportunity to chat with various health officials and professionals, other governmental representatives, and social service organizations who will be available to discuss their health programs. Educational materials will be available to assist people in understanding the most ubiquitous health issues faced by our community.
Once again the Canton Police Department will be conducting its popular medicine drop-off program. Simply bring any unwanted or expired medications, and officers from the Police Department will see to it that they are properly disposed. As always, this program is free of charge to Canton residents.
This year, although the state has drastically reduced the amount of annual flu vaccine distributed to local communities due to budget cuts, the Board of Health will resume an expanded flu vaccination program at no charge. The board has used money from its revolving fund to purchase enough flu vaccine so that anyone 4 years of age or older can receive a free flu vaccine. Additionally, Flu Mist nasal spray vaccine will be available to most children between the ages of 4 and 18.
This is the first year the Board of Health has been able to purchase flu vaccine through its revolving fund, which is financed through monies received from Medicare and medical insurance billing for insured patients. Accordingly, it is critically important for people who do have insurance to present their Medicare or insurance cards at the time they receive their flu shot. It also allows the Board of Health to be able to afford to vaccinate those who are uninsured. Reimbursement money collected from these companies will be returned to the revolving fund to purchase more vaccine or other public health items needed by the community in the future.
Please note: Flu shots obtained elsewhere will not contribute to your health department’s revolving fund nor directly benefit your community. So remember to bring your Medicare or health insurance cards to the Health Fair. If you do not have an insurance card, come and get a flu shot anyway as it will still cost you nothing.
So take some time for yourself and your health, and come to this year’s Health Fair. You are sure to learn ways to preserve your health, prevent disease, and enjoy yourself at the same time. It is hoped that this event will exceed all expectations.
As has been the practice in the past, there will be no early admissions. For more information on the 24th annual Health Fair, contact the Board of Health at 781-821-5021.
