CHS golfers a win away from playoffs
By Mike BergerThe Canton High golf team entered the week needing one more victory in two remaining matches to advance to the south sectional tournament, which begins next Monday, October 24, at the South Shore Country Club.
With one win last week, the team improved to 6-5 with remaining matches against Stoughton and Franklin.
The team played well in both of its matches last week, including a 153-165 home win over North Attleboro and a 151-155 loss to Oliver Ames.
In the North Attleboro match, senior Mike Lamir shot a 36 and executed what head coach Jim Spillane called the “most creative shot [he’s] ever seen as a coach.”
On the seventh hole at the Blue Hill Country Club, Lamir overshot the green and on his next shot had to shoot out of the woods and stumps. Lamir deliberately hit the shot off a tree and still managed to reach the green.
Junior Gavin Monagle continued to improve as he shot a season-best score of 37. Other top scores for Canton included a 39 by senior Mike Reardon and a 41 by sophomore Sam Hrubec.
Spillane said the team played outstanding golf despite losing by four strokes to Oliver Ames at the Pine Oaks Golf Course. Lamir continued his fine play, hitting a 37, which was matched by sophomore Brian Brooks. Hrubec added a 40, and sophomore Sam Riemer shot a 41. Spillane said it was noteworthy that three out of the top four scores came from sophomores.
The team was due to host Stoughton on Tuesday, October 18, followed by an away match at Franklin on October 20. The Hockomock League Individual Tournament, featuring each of the team’s top four scorers, was scheduled for Wednesday, October 19.
