Unbeaten field hockey tops Sharon, Dedham

The wins keep coming for the Canton High field hockey team, which is now a perfect 12-0 after victories last week over Sharon and nonleague Dedham.

In addition to boasting the Hockomock League’s best record, the Bulldogs have put themselves in great position for a top seed in the south sectional tournament, as they look to defend their title from last season and hopefully make a run at yet another state championship.

In the meantime, the Bulldogs have been feasting on their Hockomock opponents all season, and that trend continued last Wednesday with a 7-1 blowout win over Sharon at home.

It was a total team effort as five different players scored goals in the win, including senior Michelle Bigot, who notched her first career goal on a pass from sophomore Kelli Stigas.

Bigot was one of several reserve players who saw extended action against the Eagles, although the starters also made their mark, led by seniors Michelle McNeil and Hailey Gaughan with two goals apiece. Junior Meghan McKenna and sophomore Casey Considine also added goals, while Stephanie Rizzitano, Emma Compagna and Jackie Merrigan each chipped in with an assist.

The team did not look nearly as sharp on Saturday at Dedham; however, they made enough plays down the stretch to eke out a 2-1 win.

“It was good to come out with a win, especially on a day that not everybody was playing particularly well,” said head coach Fior Griffin, who characterized the team’s performance as its “worst of the season.”

Playing on a brand-new turf field, the Bulldogs struggled early in the game and found themselves in a scoreless tie at halftime. But they managed to turn the tide in the second half and took a 2-0 lead on goals by Gaughan and Becky Lazaro.

Dedham later cut the deficit to one, but they couldn’t get another one past goalkeeper Kolleen White, who made a couple of nice saves to help preserve the win.

Moving on to this week, the Bulldogs were scheduled to play three games in a row, including home games against Nipmuc Regional and Oliver Ames and an away game at Foxboro. The team then has a pair of road games against nonleague Westborough and Stoughton before closing out the season next Wednesday with a rematch against Franklin — the Kelly-Rex Division winners — in the Hockomock crossover game.
