Residents pitch in to bring dog to America

By

Residents from the Canton community have helped rescue a dog named Adel from war-torn Afghanistan, and he is now safely in Rhode Island. Local contributions quickly exceeded the $3,000 request made by Canton police officer Glen Piro — the total hit $3,218 this week.

Piro, who is currently serving in Afghanistan, sought the financial assistance to save Adel, a malnourished puppy that was adopted by an Army unit stationed in a remote part of Afghanistan. Adel has saved numerous lives by alerting the soldiers to the presence of insurgents. But because the weather is quickly changing, the soldiers felt the dog wouldn’t survive the winter. Adel is being cared for by the family and friends of Sgt. Eric Rom, who is serving with Piro. Both men are still serving in Afghanistan.

Police Lt. Helena Findlen said she has been in contact with Piro, who is very grateful to the Canton community for raising money for Adel. “It really raised their morale when they got the news,” Findlen said. “Both Glen and Sgt. Rom are very appreciative and grateful for all the contributions.”
