Boys’ soccer remains tied atop division

Update: The Bulldogs defeated Stoughton 4-0 at home on Tuesday to clinch at least a share of the Hockomock title. See next week’s Citizen for continuing coverage of the CHS boys’ soccer team.

It was a battle for the ages last Friday as the CHS boys’ varsity soccer team squared off against Oliver Ames with both teams needing a victory to clinch the Hockomock League’s Davenport Division title. After 80 minutes of quality soccer, however, neither team could find the back of the net as they were forced to settle for a scoreless draw.

It was the sixth tie of the season for the Bulldogs, who remained even with Oliver Ames atop the standings with one game remaining this week. Canton (7-0-5 league record) was due to host Stoughton on Tuesday, and a victory would guarantee the team at least a share of the league title for the fourth consecutive season.

The Tigers, meanwhile, sit at 8-1-3 heading into their final game against Foxboro. Canton leads the head-to-head matchup, having beaten OA at home 2-0 on September 24. However, both teams had 19 points in the standings as of Monday and could potentially share the title if they finished with the same result this week — win, lose or draw.

While last week’s game featured no scoring, head coach Danny Erickson described it as a “great battle between two tournament-ready teams.”

Goalkeeper Colby Gavigan earned his 10th shutout of the season, while Damian Kozak, Scott Levy and Michael Denehy each had strong games on attack for the Bulldogs.

Amazingly, Canton has almost as many ties this season as victories, yet they remain unbeaten and are widely considered one of the favorites in the upcoming Division 2 tournament.
