Golfers enter tournament play on a hot streak
By Mike BergerUpdate: The Bulldog golfers won the Hockomock League championship tournament, held Wednesday afternoon at Granite Links in Quincy. Mike Reardon, Mike Lamir and Sam Riemer shot a combined score of 242, beating out the other nine Hockomock teams. See next week’s Citizen for complete coverage of this remarkable accomplishment.
Winners of five of its last six matches, the CHS golf team qualified for the state playoffs last week, beating Stoughton at home and league-leading Franklin on the road. The team ended the regular season at 8-5.
“We are playing our best golf of the year so far with consistent low scores,” said head coach Jim Spillane. “We are peaking at the right time.”
The Bulldogs upset Franklin 163-167 at the Franklin Country Club, beating the Panthers on their home course for the first time in five years. Sophomore Sam Riemer led the way, shooting a three-over-par 38. Sophomore Brian Brooks was next with a 39, followed by sophomore Sam Hrubec (43) and senior Mike Reardon (43).
Earlier in the week, the Bulldogs beat Stoughton 151-178 at home at the Blue Hill Country Club, netting their lowest team score of the year. Riemer shot a one-over 36, followed by senior Kevin Marchand at 37, Brooks at 38, and senior Mike Lamir at 40.
“Those were excellent low scores,” said Spillane.
The Division 3 south sectional tournament was due to be held on Monday, October 24, at the South Shore Country Club in Hingham. There are 12 teams in the bracket, and the three teams with the lowest scores will advance to the state finals on October 31 at the Glen Ellen Country Club.
Individual golfers who finish in the top 10 percent can advance to the finals as well. Spillane will be sending his top six golfers, including Riemer, who is averaging a team-best 39.5, Lamir, Hrubec, Reardon, Brooks, and Marchand.
On Wednesday, October 26, the Hockomock League’s Individual Tournament will be held at Granite Links in Quincy. Each team will send its top three golfers. Spillane has selected Riemer, Lamir and Reardon to participate.
