Girls’ soccer clinches share of Davenport title

With a 1-1 tie against second-place Oliver Ames last week, the Canton High girls’ soccer team has guaranteed itself at least a share of the Davenport Division title and could win the crown outright with wins this week over Foxboro and Stoughton.
The Bulldogs have been almost perfect this season with no losses and just two ties, but the Tigers have been nearly as good at 9-1-2, with their only loss coming at home against Canton on September 23.
Canton head coach Paul Turner said his team played exceptionally well on that day; however, he knew the type of team OA had and expected a much tougher game when the Tigers came to town last week.
And Turner’s prediction was spot-on as OA got off to a strong start and refused to let up, battling Canton to a scoreless tie in a well-played first half.
The Tigers then made it 1-0 approximately seven minutes into the second half, but the Bulldogs evened things up on a goal by junior captain Lauren Berman, with the assist going to senior Kensey Waterman.
Turner said his team had a couple of “really good chances at the end,” but he credited the Tigers’ keeper for making some “outstanding saves.”
Turner also praised his own keeper, Kristin Burns, noting that she played one of her best games in net while finishing with five saves.
Although they would have much preferred a win, Turner said his team had respect for the Tigers and the way they performed while characterizing the tie as a “fair result.”
Due to rainouts in each of the past two weeks, the Bulldogs were looking at a very busy week with four games in six days, beginning with road games Monday and Tuesday at Foxboro and Stoughton.
The girls then face a major test on Thursday when they travel to Bishop Feehan, one of the top teams in Division 1, followed by a showdown with Franklin on Sunday in the annual Hockomock Classic.
