Field hockey snags Hock Classic Cup, No. 1 seed
By Jay TurnerAfter a blowout win over Stoughton last Monday, the Canton High field hockey team put the finishing touches on another undefeated season with a 2-1, comeback victory last Wednesday over Franklin in the Hockomock Classic.
The win over the Panthers gave the Bulldogs a final record of 16-0-1 — the same as last year’s squad — while earning them a coveted No. 1 seed in the upcoming south sectional tournament.
The reigning Division 2 south champions, Canton has now guaranteed itself home field advantage throughout the tournament, beginning tomorrow afternoon with its first round matchup against No. 16 Plymouth South.
While always cautious of a letdown, head coach Fior Griffin is expecting her players to rise to the occasion — especially after the way they performed against Franklin, the top team in the Hockomock’s Kelly-Rex Division.
In fact, Canton is now responsible for two of Franklin’s three losses this season, and both times the Bulldogs came back to win in the second half.
In last week’s contest, Canton got the tying goal just before halftime — a beautiful goal that Becky Lazaro one-timed past the keeper. Later, about midway through the second half, Katie Kelleher found freshman Mary McNeil on a breakaway for the game-winning goal.
“It was just a really good field hockey game,” said Griffin, whose team captured its second consecutive Hock Classic Cup with the victory.
More important than the hardware, however, was the fact that the girls made few mistakes and never panicked after falling behind 1-0. They also showed good fundamental skills and played excellent team defense, said Griffin.
The Bulldogs also played well a few days earlier at Stoughton, topping the Black Knights by a 7-1 final. The visitors scored early and often in this one, including goals by senior reserve player Michelle Bigot, who notched her second of the season, and Kolleen White, who is normally the team’s starting goalkeeper.
