Carter, Herbert E.
By Canton CitizenHerbert E. Carter, of Canton, passed away November 6, 2011, at Norwood Hospital.
Born in Somerville, he grew up in Reading and graduated from Reading High School and Tufts University after serving in the South Pacific during World War II.
Herb met Fran, his beloved wife of 64 years, while working in the Watertown Arsenal. They married and moved to Canton in 1951 to raise their family. Herb and Fran lived an active life, traveling, square dancing and playing whist.
He worked as an engineer for IBM in Waltham/Boston for 35 years until retiring in 1985. He split his retirement between Canton and Seminole, Florida. Herb’s interests over the years included extensive reading, competitive badminton, photography, and playing golf.
When Fran became ill, Herb unselfishly devoted himself to her care for four years, which allowed her to stay at home. Herb touched everyone he met with his positive outlook and generous spirit. He brought great joy to his family and friends through his incredible sense of humor and ability to see the best in everyone he met.
Beloved husband of the late Frances E. (Murray). Father of Patricia A. Johnson of Cotuit, Gail V. Rovinelli of Canton, Nancy J. D’Amora of New Milford, CT, and Steven M. Carter of Foxboro. Brother of Pauline Graustein of SC, Elizabeth Cleveland of FL, Jean Gavin of Ohio, and the late Robert and David Carter. Also survived by 12 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
Visiting hours at the Dockray and Thomas Funeral Home, 455 Washington Street, Friday, November 11, from 4-8 p.m. Relatives and friends invited to attend a funeral service at the funeral home Saturday morning at 10. Interment Knollwood Memorial Park, Canton.
