Girls’ soccer opens tourney on a high note
By Jay TurnerAfter a whirlwind end to the regular season that featured three games in three days last week, the Hockomock champion CHS girls’ soccer team opened tournament play on Monday with a convincing 7-0 win over 14th seeded Diman Regional.
A technical school in Fall River, Diman (10-6-2) went into the game with plenty of confidence after dominating English High School in the preliminary round 9-0 on Saturday. But they were no match for the third-seeded Bulldogs, who lit up the scoreboard with five first-half goals before turning to their bench to close out the win.
Five different players scored goals for the Bulldogs, including two each by senior Vicki Tondre and junior Lauren Berman. Junior Brianna Duserick also figured prominently in the victory, netting a goal and two assists, while Kensey Waterman and recent JV call-up Sam Sullivan added the other two goals.
The game was actually scoreless through the first 15 minutes of play, although head coach Paul Turner said it was only a matter of time before the goals began pouring in. Turner said the skill level of the Canton girls took the Bengals by surprise. At the same time, he praised the Diman players and coaches, calling them a “very spirited,” hardworking group.
While it was a relatively easy win for the Bulldogs, it helped to rejuvenate the team after a brutal stretch last week that ended with a tough loss to undefeated Bishop Feehan. Canton had also been undefeated to that point, but they were exhausted, having already played two games over the previous two days.
Turner said it was hard to fault his players for the lackluster effort, especially after Tuesday night’s impressive victory over Franklin in the Hockomock Classic.
In fact, Turner said the girls played their best soccer of the season against the Panthers, winning 2-1 on a pair of goals by Berman.
The Bulldogs did not play as well the night before at Silver Lake, but they still won comfortably by a final score of 4-1.
Canton is now 15-1-2 and was due to face No. 6 Scituate in the sectional quarterfinals last night at home. A win in that game would set up a possible rematch with Medfield — the team that knocked the Bulldogs out of the tournament last season on their way to the Division 2 state title.
Update: The Bulldogs defeated Scituate 6-0 Wednesday night to advance to the sectional semifinals against Medfield. The game will be played on Friday at noon at Bridgewater-Raynham High School.
