BHRTS accepting apps for construction projects

By

Blue Hills Regional Technical School is accepting applications for house construction or large addition projects for the next school year. Residents or land owners within the nine district towns are eligible to submit applications no later than January 15, 2012.

Applicants must be a resident or land owner for a minimum of five years in one of the nine district towns, which include Avon, Braintree, Canton, Dedham, Holbrook, Milton, Norwood, Randolph, and Westwood.

Blue Hills students in the construction technology program work on the projects at a cost of 25 percent of the price of building materials handled. There is an additional $250 non-refundable application fee. Should your project not be selected in year one, the fee qualifies the applicant for consideration during the next four school years, but the application must be renewed each year. Owners must have financing, a complete set of architectural plans, and all necessary permits and variances.

Once the school makes its selection, a deposit must be received by the district by June 1 of the school year submitted in accordance with the following scale:

Projects estimated at 1,000 square feet or less – $5,250

Projects estimated at 1,001 to 3,000 square feet – $7,875

Projects estimated at 3,001 square feet or more – $10,500

The balance of the service charge is to be paid in monthly increments on the first of every month starting November 1. Monthly billing will be based on a 25 percent service charge on the total cost of all building materials used in the house construction during the previous month. House construction candidates will bear the transportation cost of the construction container. The container will be put in place in September and removed in June. In addition, there may be an additional transportation surcharge. This surcharge may be deducted from the final payment at the end of the school year.

Projects are chosen based on their educational value for the students. The director of vocational programs and the construction technology lead teacher will visit potential sites. The school is seeking a new home construction project or large addition going off the side or back of the house. Students are supervised at all times by expert instructors who are also licensed professionals in the construction and electrical trades, and the work meets all state and local codes.

All projects submitted for consideration should be of a size and scope to take a full school year. Projects begin in September and run through early June. Selected applicants must meet all the deadlines as outlined in the application on plans, permits, funding, and the foundation ready for construction to start in September.

For more information or an application, call the director of vocational programs office at 781-828-5800, ext. 230, or go to the school’s website at www.bluehills.org.
