Gorman, James F.
By Canton CitizenJames F. Gorman, a retired Boston Police officer, passed away October 6, 2011, in West Roxbury. Beloved husband of 65 years to Virginia Hartling.
Upon graduation from Somerville High School in 1938, Jim joined the National Guard. He enlisted in the Army Corps of Engineers in January 1941. During World War II he was in the South Pacific and was awarded the Presidential Unit citation for combat with the first Marine Division in Guadalcanal in 1942.
Upon his return to civilian life he met and married his beloved Ginny and began a 30-year career with the Boston Police Department, serving most of this time in the Charlestown district. Upon retirement from the department, he began part-time office work with the law firm of Howard and Timson in Norwood, until his final retirement in 2006.
Jim was an avid fisherman, hunter and avid outdoorsman. He was a passionate fan and regular attendee of Canton youth sports, following his three grandsons in youth hockey, soccer and baseball since 1993.
He was the devoted father of Patricia and her husband, Al Fiorini, of Plainville, Judith and her late husband, Peter Wendt, of Canton, and Linda and her husband, Paul Struzik, of Canton. Loving Papa of Sarah and her husband, Denis Collins, Katherine and her husband, Jason Orlowski, Jennifer and her husband, Matt Sanders, Michael, Patrick and Jamesbrendan Wendt, and great-grandfather of Nora and Annie Collins.
A funeral service was held at the William J. Gormley Funeral Home in West Roxbury, followed by a funeral mass in St. Theresa’s Church. Interment St. Joseph Cemetery. Late member of Somerville American Legion Post #19, DAV and VFW. Donations may be made in his name to the Alzheimer’s Association, 311 Arsenal St., Watertown, MA 02472.
