Photo Contest Winner
By GuestKristine McNamara of Canton tied for top prize in the Wild Horses category of the 2011 Outer Banks (NC) Photo Contest, sponsored by Outer Banks-based Village Realty.
McNamara’s photo is an endearing shot of wild horses — three adults and a knobby-kneed colt — by the ocean on the beach north of Corolla, North Carolina.
More than 100 wild Spanish mustangs live in the area north of Corolla. Visitors to these northern Outer Banks beaches frequently see the wild horses walking along the beach or grazing in the grasses by the homes. The horses are an integral part of what draws visitors to this area. Though they are wild, they are protected by North Carolina laws and by the Corolla Wild Horse Fund.
“I hope these horses stay protected for many years to come,” said McNamara.
The Village Realty judges concurred: “We hope so too, Kristine. These horses are magnificent animals and are part of what makes the Outer Banks so special. Great photo … love the front-on view since it looks like the horses were sizing you up!”
As a winner in the category, McNamara won a $100 gift certificate that may be used toward a stay in a Village Realty vacation rental in 2011 or 2012.
The 2012 Outer Banks Photo Contest will begin in April and run through the end of September. The contest is for amateur photographers only; no professionals allowed. No purchase is necessary to enter. Go to www.obxphotocontest.com for details.
