Canton receives fire safety grant
State Representative William C. Galvin (D-Canton) was informed by the state fire marshal that Canton will receive $5,265 from the Executive Office of Public Safety and Security (EOPSS) under the Student Awareness of Fire Education (SAFE) grant program.
This program provides resources to local fire departments, which allows them to visit schools with fire prevention tips and life-saving instructions in case students are ever caught in a fire. SAFE is credited with saving lives throughout the state with children taking action to help family members flee burning homes and calling 911 in emergencies.
“SAFE grants are a powerful tool in decreasing fires and fire-related fatalities, and I am grateful the legislature was able to allocate funding to EOPSS for this program,” said Galvin. “I commend the Canton Fire Department for their active and continued involvement with the SAFE program.”
Child fire deaths have dropped by 66 percent since the SAFE program started in 1995. Additionally, fire deaths reached a record low in 2010, and the decrease is attributed to fire education programs such as SAFE. For more information about the SAFE program, please visit www.mass.gov/eopss.
