After opening the season with a home loss to Barnstable last Wednesday, the Canton High girls’ varsity ice hockey team responded in a big way Saturday at Dover-Sherborn, winning 10-2 to even its record at 1-1 overall.

Senior assistant captain Haley Gaughan finished with a hat trick, giving her four already this season through two games. Junior Meghan Lennon is second on the team with three goals after scoring two more against Dover-Sherborn.

In addition, two players notched their first career varsity goal in the win: sophomore defenseman Jill Eckler and freshman forward Mary McNeil, who was assisted on the play by her big sister, senior captain Michelle McNeil.

The Bulldogs put the game away early with four first period goals, then added four more in the second and two more in the third. Sophomore goaltender Emily Buckley played well in her second straight start, while backup goalie Nicole Sennett filled in admirably in the third period.

The Bulldogs did not play as well against Barnstable earlier in the week, although head coach Kelly Rider did not seem overly concerned considering the circumstances, namely the talent of the opponent and the fact that it was the first game of the season.

Canton managed to tie it at 1-1 early in the second period, but Barnstable exploded for four goals in the second and held on for the 5-3 win.

Gaughan led the Bulldogs with a goal and an assist, while Lennon and sophomore Katie Kelleher added a goal apiece.

As for overall expectations this season, Rider said the sky is truly the limit for this veteran-laden squad, which returns its top ten point scorers from 2011 and also features several talented newcomers, including freshman Kelsey Trerice, who has already emerged as one of the team’s top defensemen.

“They all know what it takes to win and have all been really close,” said Rider, referring to their recent exploits on the field hockey and soccer fields. “If we can all play together, I think we can be really unstoppable.”

This week, the Bulldogs were scheduled to host Duxbury in a rematch of last year’s Division 2 south sectional quarterfinals. Then they have a long layoff before returning to action January 3 against King Philip at home.
