Girls’ basketball tops Foxboro, falls to Norwood

After opening the season with back-to-back victories over Davenport Division opponents, the Canton High girls’ basketball team suffered a minor setback against nonleague Norwood last week, falling 42-40 despite dominating the Mustangs for three full quarters.

“We played three great quarters and in the fourth quarter we just couldn’t finish,” said head coach Caitlin Jamiel, who is now 2-1 in her first season at the helm.

Jamiel said the players seemed to lose focus and got a “little too comfortable” after the lead grew to 11 by the end of the third quarter. The Bulldog offense also went ice cold as the team managed just four points — all on free throws — in the entire fourth quarter.

Meanwhile, Norwood kept chipping away at the lead, eventually scoring the go-ahead basket with 30 seconds left in the game.

“They wanted it,” Jamiel said of the Mustangs. “They tried everything imaginable to win that game.”

Senior Olivia Murphy was the lone bright spot for Canton offensively, scoring a team-high 19 points in the loss.

The team’s most consistent producer, Murphy also played well in the Bulldogs’ 46-35 road win over Foxboro last week, as she finished with double-digit rebounds and a remarkable nine blocks to go along with nine points.

“That game was amazing,” Jamiel said of the victory. “Everyone played hard and everyone played with intensity and focus.”

Senior guard Alana Pitts-Anaya led all Bulldogs with 15 points, while freshman Gabby Kenefick continued her impressive debut with an excellent defensive performance.

After a brief break for the holidays, the Bulldogs got back into action last night with a road game versus nonleague Abington. They will play again tonight at the Scituate Holiday Tournament, followed by a week of practices before their next game on Friday, January 6, against Mansfield at home.
