Girls’ hockey falls to 1-2 after loss to Duxbury
By Jay TurnerFor the second time this season, the CHS girls’ hockey team played two periods of quality hockey against a tough opponent, but it still wasn’t enough as the Bulldogs fell to 0-2 at home and 1-2 overall after last Wednesday’s 7-2 loss to visiting Duxbury.
It wasn’t exactly the result that the Bulldogs were expecting, and certainly not against Duxbury, the same team that ended Canton’s season last winter by virtue of a 7-0 shutout in the Division 2 south quarterfinals.
Canton did look a lot sharper this time; however, much like its loss to Barnstable on December 14, the Bulldogs surrendered a flurry of goals that effectively put the game out of reach.
The game was actually scoreless for most of the opening period, but the Dragons found the net twice in the final three minutes to take a 2-0 lead. Canton then responded with a strong second period, outscoring Duxbury 2-1 behind senior Haley Gaughan and junior Meghan Lennon, who both had a goal and an assist.
Unfortunately for Canton, those were the only two goals the team could muster. Meanwhile, the Duxbury offense exploded in the final frame, scoring four unanswered goals to seal the win.
Despite the final score, head coach Kelly Rider praised the work of sophomore goalie Emily Buckley, whose play early on helped keep the Bulldogs within striking distance.
Nevertheless, a sub .500 record is simply not going to cut it for a team this talented, and the Bulldogs know they must improve in several areas in order to remain in the conversation as one of the region’s elite teams.
After a long layoff, the girls will have two chances to get back in the win column next week, beginning Tuesday at home against King Philip. The Bulldogs will then take on Franklin on Saturday, January 7, also at home.
