Cash, Paul F.

Paul F. Cash, 87, of Canton, died Wednesday morning, January 4, 2012, at the Hellenic Nursing Home in Canton after a lengthy illness.

Born in South Boston, Mr. Cash had been a lifelong Canton resident. He was educated in Canton and at the Wayside School for Boys in Sudbury. During his time at the Wayside School, he and his brother assisted in building the foundation for the Martha Mary Chapel on the property.

He retired from the Northrop Grumman Company in Norwood after over 60 years of service in its distribution department.

Mr. Cash joined the Marine Corps in April of 1943, serving in the Pacific Theatre as a corporal. Taking part in one of the most memorable battles of the Pacific campaign, he was part of the second wave to storm the beaches of Iwo Jima and was witness to the nearby original raising of the American flag at Mount Suribachi.

He made a pledge that if he returned safe, he would recognize those who never returned by marching in the Memorial Day parade every year. He kept this promise and marched for over 60 years until his failing health prevented him from doing so.

He was a founding member of the town of Canton’s Veterans Honor Guard and frequently volunteered at schools making presentations about World War II. He was a member of the American Legion Post #24 in Canton and had been a recipient of Canton’s Distinguished Veteran’s Service Award.

Mr. Cash was devoted to his flag, his country, and his community. He is described by Ed Piana as a man with humility, honesty and honor. He loved tending to his vegetable garden, playing with children, spending time on the Cape in Dennisport, being at the ocean, and making model airplanes and attending air shows.

A communicant of Saint John the Evangelist Parish, he had served for many years as an usher.

He was the son of the late William and Lillian (Saluto) Cash. He was raised by the late Leo and Alice Hartigan.

Mr. Cash is survived by his wife of 65 years, June A. (Sheppard) Cash; his daughter, Eileen Jameson and her husband, Lee, of Putnam, CT; his sons, Jim Cash and his wife, Linda, of Canton, and John Cash of San Anselmo, CA; his brothers, John Cash of Canton, William A. Cash and Charles Cash, both of Stoughton; and his granddaughters, Lee Christine, Kelly and Krista.

He was predeceased by his daughter, Janet Morris; his sisters, Trudy Monette and Rose Marie Hoyt; and his brothers, Robert W. and Richard Cash.

Funeral services in celebration of Paul’s life were held Monday, January 9, at the Roache-Pushard Family Home for Funerals, 210 Sherman Street, followed by a mass of Christian burial at St. John’s Church.

Paul’s family strongly encourages expressions of sympathy be made in his memory to the Canton Veterans Services Department, 92 Pleasant St., Williams Estate, Canton, MA 02021.
