Gymnasts outshine KP for season’s 1st win
By Canton CitizenThis past week in the world of Canton gymnastics was one that set a new tone for the direction of the squad. While the week brought both a win and a loss, the Bulldogs had two solid performances, which bode well for the rest of the season.
Last Wednesday, the team outscored the King Philip Warriors 123-118.2 to earn its first win since the 2009-2010 season. Performing well all around, freshman Abby Greene earned the high score of the meet with an 8.9 on the beam.
Other strong performances came from junior captain Jessie Brooks and, in her first meet for the Bulldogs, freshman Meghan Peters. Brooks, a “consistently great performer and scorer in all her events,” according to coach Carla King, positively contributed on the floor, beam and vault. Meanwhile, Peters opted for routines of great difficulty and stood out on the bars, beam and floor.
Scoring only one point less than Wednesday’s meet total, the Bulldogs did not fare as well against Sharon on Friday. Falling 135.9-122.05, Canton was unable to defeat one of the top teams in the state; however, there were several noteworthy Bulldog performances.
Senior Josh Klein continued to surpass the rest on the vault with a team-high score of 9.0. Freshman Alec Terenzio was not far behind with an 8.6. Greene grabbed the team-high scores on the bars, beam and floor, showing strength and a consistency that add depth to the team.
In the weeks ahead, Coach King looks to further develop her team. She stated that they continue to perform well but believes they “can do better with more work on harder skills and cleaning up routines in all events.”
The Bulldogs were scheduled to face Oliver Ames at home on Monday and will host North Attleboro next Monday.
