After putting up a ten-spot on Stoughton on January 7, the Canton High boys’ ice hockey team went out and duplicated the feat in its very next game, pummeling division opponent Foxboro 10-1 last Wednesday at Metropolis Rink.

Although it doesn’t seem possible given the score, Foxboro actually outplayed the Bulldogs in the early going, forcing several turnovers in the Canton zone. The Bulldogs eventually found their rhythm, however, and the Warriors soon found themselves trailing by three on a flurry of goals by Nick O’Connor, Pat Ward, and senior captain Matt Malloy, who would add two more in the third period for his first career hat trick.

Team scoring leader O’Connor also added another goal — his second one coming on a breakaway in the second period — and senior TJ Duggan chipped in a pair of his own.

Other top performers in the victory included junior Mike Denehy, who scored his first goal of the season while collecting a handful of assists; sophomore Brian Brooks, who tallied multiple assists; and junior Justin Rudy, who rounded out the scoring for the Bulldogs.

Although the offense clearly stole the show, the team also got a solid performance from its two backup goaltenders, seniors Kyle Baker and Nick Naples.

Meanwhile, starting netminder Rich Nee had one of his best outings of the season in the Bulldogs’ other game last week, tallying 15 saves in a 3-0 road win over King Philip on Saturday.

Canton goals were scored by freshman Brian Hagan, junior Kurt Leavitt, and junior Matt Lennon in a well-balanced effort by the Bulldogs.

“We played well on offense and defense,” said head coach Brian Shuman. “It was a really good win. We shut them down and had a lot of scoring chances throughout the game.”

With two more wins last week, the Bulldogs’ are now 6-1 overall and 3-1 against division opponents. However, the road was about to get a lot tougher with games this week against the top three teams in the Hockomock’s large school division: at Franklin (8-0-1) on Monday, home against North Attleboro (8-2-0) Wednesday, and at Mansfield (7-1-0) Saturday at 8:15 p.m.
