3rd annual ‘Canton Writes’ contest kicks off Jan. 28

By

Canton Writes, the town-wide short story and poetry contest, kicks off Saturday, January 28. As in the past two years, there will be five categories for authors to enter: elementary school, middle school, high school, young adult (19-30) and adult. A writer may submit an entry in both the short story and poetry categories, not to exceed 1,000 words.

This year, the Canton Writes committee — including chair Kathy Fox Alfano, Dottie Shea, Peg Mead, Joyce Wiseman, Michael Sundin, and Mark Lague — ask that entries be submitted in hard (paper) copy to the main desk at the Canton Public Library by March 7, as well as submitted by email to murjur@tmurgent.com in order to be published in the Canton Writes book.

Winners will be announced in the Canton Citizen on April 5, and the awards night will be held on April 10 at the Canton Public Library. First, second and third prizes will be awarded, and authors will have the opportunity to read their work to the assembly.

A new opportunity this year for authors 19 and older is a writing workshop given by Canton resident Gregory Mone, author of several novels for adults and children, as well as a work of humorous nonfiction. His book Fish won the 2011 Carol Otis Hurst Award for the best children’s writing by a New England author.

Mone has volunteered to lead a fiction writing workshop, during which authors may hone their writing skills in a two-hour class that will cover the basics of plot, character, narration and more. He will review examples from great and not-so-great books, engage in a few writing exercises, and discuss the writing of workshop participants. Ideally, participants will submit a piece of their own work — an idea, an opening paragraph, even a full story — beforehand for the group to discuss. Class size is limited to 12; writers may sign up at the main desk of the library, first come, first served.

Submission forms and more information may be found at www.town.canton.ma.us/library. Canton Writes is sponsored by the Canton Citizen, the Friends of the Canton Public Library, and the Canton Cultural Council.
