Fire Department receives $60K grant for mobile radios
By Mike BergerThe Fire Department has received notification that it will receive a $60,000 federal FEMA grant to replace an outdated portable and mobile radio system. The grant was written by Deputy Chief Scott Johnson. Fire Lt. Brian Marshall said the new equipment should arrive within a month.
Fire Chief Charlie Doody had submitted a capital budget request for the radios, which will now be rescinded or used for other purposes.
Fallen tree damages power lines, postal truck, home
Heavy winds on Friday, January 13, caused a tree to fall on power lines, which then fell on an unmanned postal truck and caused damage to a house on Hemenway Drive off Green Street at 2:15 p.m. Fire Lt. Brian Marshall said the fallen lines caused some structural damage to the house. NSTAR and the building inspector were called to the scene to review the damage.

CPD assists Milton in check forgery case
Tape surveillance reviews of transactions at the Rte. 138 Bank of Canton branch by Canton police led to the January 10 arrest of a 31-year-old Milton man. Milton police had notified Canton police of a stolen check incident in Milton, and some of the checks were cashed at the Bank of Canton. William Baker was arrested and charged with two counts each of check forgery, uttering a false check, and larceny of a check over $250.
Police make drug arrest
A several-month investigation by the Canton Detective Bureau led to a search warrant and arrest of a 26-year-old Canton man last week. On Friday, January 13, police searched the residence at 338 Washington Street and arrested Gregory M. Griffin. He was charged with one count each of possession to distribute a class B (cocaine) and class D (marijuana) substance and drug violations near a school (Gridley School). Police Lt. Helena Findlen said police found 13 grams of cocaine valued at $750 and four grams of marijuana valued at $1,000. Griffin was held on a high bail amount, according to Findlen, who praised the “great police work” of the entire detective bureau.
