Young woman’s quick thinking scares off burglars
By Mike BergerCanton police said an 18-year-old woman was able to secure herself in a locked bedroom and call 911 to alert police to a burglary in progress at a home on Green Street last Friday, January 20, just before 11 p.m. Hearing suspects downstairs, the woman cried out that she was immediately calling police, and the suspects fled on foot. Several officers and Bosco, the Canton Police canine, immediately responded and searched the area but did not find the suspects, who are believed to be two men. Police Lt. Helena Findlen said police believe the suspects broke into the home believing that no one was home at the time. Nothing was reported missing. Findlen said no other break-ins had been reported in the area.
Suspicious bank trash determined to be a battery
Police said a suspicious item in a trash receptacle inside the ATM vestibule at the Bank of Canton branch on Turnpike Street was not an explosive device, but was apparently a battery from a greeting card. Police and fire officials responded to a call reporting a possible bomb scare at the bank on Monday, January 23, shortly after 9 a.m. Police cordoned off the area and notified the State Police bomb squad. Police Lt. Helena Findlen said the item in the trash barrel was ticking, which caused the 911 call to police. The bank was closed for a few hours until the investigation was completed. The State Police are still investigating the origin of the device.
Gas line rupture repaired on Rte. 138
Workers digging outside the Mai Place restaurant at 323 Turnpike Street on Tuesday, January 17, apparently hit a gas line, causing a leak in the Route 138 area. The surrounding commercial properties were evacuated until the utility company repaired the line, according to Fire Lt. Brian Marshall.
Firefighters quickly douse chimney fire
Firefighters used a dry chemical agent to extinguish a chimney fire at 154 Dedham Street on Sunday, January 22. Fire Lt. Brian Marshall said the fire caused minor damage inside the chimney. Marshall said the built-up creosote ignited when the homeowner used the chimney. The home was briefly evacuated, but residents were able to return approximately 40 minutes later.
