Indoor track members excel in regional competitions

Both the CHS boys’ and girls’ track teams have been busy over the past two weekends, participating in the MSTCA Division 3 Relays, the State Coaches Invitational, and the State Coaches Elite Meet.

Several relays from Canton were among the top 15 at the MSTCA Relays, held January 22 at the Reggie Lewis Center in Boston.

For the girls’ team, the 4×50 shuttle dash of Vicky Tondre, Mellyn Costello, Erika Boughter, and Liz Korycansky came in ninth place with a time of 26.43 seconds. The 4×200 relay also did well, placing 11th and qualifying for states with a time of 1:53.6. This unit included Tondre, Costello, Michaela Kelly, and Jackie Merrigan.

The girls’ 4×800 qualified for states with a 15th place finish and a time of 10:36.37. The relay included Mairead Bagley, Courtney Loughnane, Kelly, and Merrigan.

In the field events, the long jump team came in third place behind the efforts of Costello, Tondre, and Boughter.

For the boys’ team, two relay teams stood out. The sprint medley finished fourth overall with a fast time of 24.41 seconds behind Cam Huber, Obi Nwankwo, Derek Seto, and Evan Feldman. The 4×400 relay finished eighth in 3:39.63 behind Nwankwo, Huber, Seto, and Jake Fruci.

On Saturday, January 28, at the State Coaches Invitational in Boston, Michaela Kelly placed sixth in the 600-meter run, and both Craig and Ian Mills just missed qualifying for states in the 600 and 1,000, respectively.

Costello placed 11th in the long jump with a season-best jump of 15 feet, four inches.

On Sunday, January 29, the top 24 athletes in the state in each event came together for the State Coaches Elite Meet. Tondre placed 17th in the 100-meter dash and had her most consistent day ever in the long jump, placing sixth with a best jump of 17 feet, 1.7 inches.

Huber placed second in the 600 with a career best time of 1:23. The boys’ 4×400 relay team of of Huber, Feldman, Fruci, and Nwankwo placed ninth, running a season-best time of 3:32.70.

Next up for both track teams is the league meet, scheduled for Saturday, February 11, at the Reggie Lewis Center.
