Rosenberg leads wrestlers to impressive showing at sectionals
By Jeffrey CattelFour Canton High wrestlers qualified for the state competition after finishing in the top four in their respective weight classes at the south sectional championships last weekend. As a team, the Bulldogs placed fifth at sectionals, one spot shy of advancing to postseason play.
Senior captain David Rosenberg (126 lbs.) led the team with a first-place finish.
“He really peaked at the right time,” coach Brian Caffelle said. “He struggled to find his identity as an aggressive wrestler at the beginning of the season, but he really turned the corner at the Hock Championship the week before.”
In the finals, Rosenberg faced an opponent from Pembroke who he had lost to by a single point earlier in the season. Determined to finish with a different outcome, Rosenberg wrestled aggressively and dominated in what Caffelle described as an “almost perfect match.”
Other strong performances came from sophomore standouts Chris Sullivan (113 lbs.) and Quinn Merrigan (120 lbs.), who took second in their respective weight classes, and senior captain Josh Matt (160 lbs.), who finished fourth. Sullivan lost in the finals to a Foxboro opponent he beat the previous week in the finals of the league championship. Merrigan fell short in the finals against a two-time sectional, state, and all-state champion from Hingham.
“When most opponents face him, they wrestle not to lose, to hopefully keep a close, respectable match,” Caffelle said of Merrigan’s opponent. “But Quinn wasn’t afraid to take risks, and ultimately he ended up adding more points to the board for Canton.”
The Bulldogs will also bring senior heavyweight Peter Sheehan and freshman Rob DiCalogero (132 lbs.) as alternates to the state competition following their fifth and sixth place finishes at sectionals.
Earlier in the week, Canton dominated in an impressive 44-36 victory over longtime rival Stoughton. Out of the 12 matches in the dual meet, Canton came away with eight wins.
“You don’t need to say too much in this town to get mentally prepared for a meet against Stoughton,” Caffelle said. “But even with that being said, the team wrestled smartly and aggressively to put points on the board and make sure we ended the regular season on a good note with a win.”
Results from this weekend’s state tournament will appear in next week’s Citizen.
