Almost a third of track team advances to D3 meet
By Mike BergerFifteen members of the Canton High indoor track tram will be advancing to the Division 3 Indoor Track and Field Championships, to be held tomorrow afternoon at the Reggie Lewis Center in Boston.
“This is a pretty big number considering that we only have a combined team of around 50,” said head coach Brian Mattson. “We had a great [Hockomock championship meet] Saturday, and we are now looking forward to a big day on Friday.”
Both teams are coming off the league meet, held February 11, at the Reggie Lewis Center, where the girls’ team came in sixth and the boys’ team placed ninth out of teams.
Individually, Vicky Tondre, Michaela Kelly, and Mellyn Costello paced the girls, while Derek Seto, Obi Nwankwo, and Jake Fruci led the boys.
Tondre won the long jump title with a jump of 17 feet, one inch and also placed second in the 55-meter dash in 7.53 seconds. Kelly placed fourth in the 600 with a personal-best time of 1:41.39. In addition, Costello finished fifth in the long jump with a jump of 15 feet, two and a quarter inches. Mattson said there were many other personal bests recorded as well as several athletes, including Jackie Merrigan, who just missed qualifying for the state meet.
For the boys’ team, Nwankwo, a junior, placed fourth in the 300-meter run with a time of 36.62 seconds. The 4×400 relay team of Nwankwo, Evan Feldman, Fruci, and Cam Huber placed fourth, while Seto, a senior, picked up an eighth-place finish in the 55-meter dash (6.99) and ninth-place finish in the high jump (5’2”). Fruci also placed ninth in the 1,000 meter race with a time of 2:46.18.
Senior Julian Malbranche and sophomore Anthony Maffie had a huge day in shot put, as both achieved personal bests and hit their season goals. Malbranche threw for 39’9.5” and Maffie threw for 30’3”.
