CHS swimmers wrap up memorable season at states
By Jay TurnerA memorable winter season came to an end for the Canton High swim team last week, with six female swimmers competing against the state’s best at the Division 2 state swimming championships, held Sunday evening at Harvard University.

The six participants represented Canton’s largest contingent at a state meet in the past several seasons, and while none of the girls finished in the top 10, they all still managed to impress their coach, who continued to sing their praises long after the meet had ended.
“It was a great day,” said Lori Mooney, who lauded her swimmers for their hard work and dedication. “It was amazing that Canton sent so many to states.”
The Bulldogs’ best performance on Sunday was turned in by the 200-yard freestyle relay team, which placed 15th out of 25 teams behind junior Brianna Duserick and a trio of freshmen: Kim Frazier, Julia Guerini, and Shannon McLaughlin.
McLaughlin, the team’s top swimmer in several events this season, also competed individually in both the 50 free and 100 free, placing 18th and 19th with respective times of 26.43 and 57.40 seconds. Both times were solid, although neither matched her performance at sectionals, where she finished tenth in the 50 and swam an incredible 55.44 en route to a fourth-place finish in the 100.
Fellow freshman Amanda Walsh also failed to top her sectional time in the 100-yard breaststroke; however, she completed the race and still ended the season as one of the top 23 swimmers in her event in all of Division 2.
Also competing at the meet in one of the relay events was CHS senior captain Alison McHugh, a highly respected leader whose four-year career included three sectional appearances and several event wins.
