Sophomore duo wraps up season at All-States
By Jeffrey CattelCHS sophomore wrestling duo Chris Sullivan (113 lbs.) and Quinn Merrigan (120 lbs.) didn’t place at the recent MIAA All-State competition, but the two managed to hold their own, often against competitors two years their senior.
Sullivan and Merrigan had already become the youngest wrestlers in Canton High history to advance to the Division 3 state tournament, where Sullivan finished as champion and Merrigan took home second place.
At the All-State meet, held February 25 at Salem High School, Sullivan finished 2-2, one win shy of placing sixth in the competition for his weight class. After losing his first match, Sullivan rebounded with two consecutive wins.
“Some kids don’t have the mental toughness to lose an early match,” head coach Brian Caffelle said. “But Chris came back on the mat with a vengeance.”
Sullivan started down in the final match, which was characteristic of many of his matches throughout the season. But his opponent continued to be aggressive on his feet and tacked on a lead that proved too difficult to surmount.
Merrigan struggled to pull out a win at All-States in what Caffelle described as “one of, if not the toughest weight class in the entire state this year.”
“Both Chris and Quinn have shown dramatic improvement over the course of the past season,” Caffelle said. “And the best news is that they both have two more chances to go out and get what they want in terms of being an All-State champion.”
