GMS student wins spot at regional spelling bee
By Canton CitizenOn Saturday, March 24, at Lombardo’s in Randolph, Canton resident Courtland Priest will compete against 24 of the region’s top spellers in the Comcast South Shore Regional Spelling Bee for a chance to travel to Washington, D.C., to participate in the renowned Scripps National Spelling Bee.
Priest, an eighth grader, won the qualifying bee at the Galvin Middle School earlier this month with the word “zigzaggedness,” earning a spot at the regional bee for the third straight year. He actually won this regional bee in 2010, but was unable to best Franklin’s Surabhi Iyer last year.
“We are proud to be sponsoring the Comcast South Shore Regional Spelling Bee as part of our ongoing commitment to invest in the local communities we serve,” said Steve Hackley, senior vice president of Comcast’s Greater Boston Region. “We are very excited to see Courtland at the regional competition and we look forward to sending a student from the south shore to Washington, D.C. to compete at the national bee in May for the fourth year in a row.”
Footage of the Comcast South Shore Regional Spelling Bee will be available in late March in the “Get Local” section of the On Demand menu for Comcast digital cable customers to watch at no additional cost.
