Canton backs Romney in GOP primary

By

As was the case all over Massachusetts on Tuesday, former Governor Mitt Romney sailed to an easy victory in Canton in the Republican primary election, garnering over 78 percent of the local vote to easily beat out Rick Santorum and Ron Paul.

Romney, who collected 72 percent of the vote statewide, carried each of Canton’s six precincts while receiving a total of 1,257 votes.

Santorum finished a distant second with 133 votes, followed by Paul with 113 votes and Newt Gingrich with 94 votes.

Jon Huntsman received three votes, and Rick Perry and Michele Bachmann both received one vote. Six GOP voters selected “no preference.”

On the Democratic side, 367 Canton voters turned out to voice their support for President Barack Obama, who is running unopposed, and 67 Canton voters chose no preference.
